I had previously posted a link to Go-OO as a lite alternative to OpenOffice, however this app seems to have changed its focus:

  • Speed
  • Compatibility with WordPerfect graphics
  • Compatibility with MS Excel Spreadsheet macros

This is good, however that still leaves an issue for those that don’t want to download the 150Mb file (v. 3+)  from OpenOffice.org, and deal with a footprint of this size.

Another alternative is to run the PortableApps Suite – you can run on your USB, as designed, however I have friends who run this on their hard drive due to their need for a smaller footprint.

So whether you want OpenOffice and other apps for your thumb drive (USB memory stick), or just want to run OpenOffice on your computer’s hard drive, PortableApps might be an option for you.

Update 30-jun-2010: check out information on the PortableApps version of OpenOffice – which also includes Portable Java to ensure that your portable OS works on Java sites (in the case of Firefox), and that the Java features of OpenOffice also run!

It includes Firefox, OpenOffice, Pidgin and a host of other applications that have been adapted for running off your Flash Thumb Drive / external drive and even runs them from a Windows-style navigation menu that runs in your system tray. No more hunting for the executables on your memory stick.

Yay!
